OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH

Occupational health

Definition:
  • According to ILO/WHO(1950) – “Occupational health is the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social wellbeing of workers in all occupation; the prevention among workers of departures from health caused by their working conditions; the protection of workers in their employment from risks from factors adverse to health, the placing and maintenance of the worker in an occupational environment adapted to his psychological and psychological equipment , and, to summarize the adaption of work to man and of each man to his job ”.
  • Occupational health is the study of the effects of the adverse environmental conditions in the place of employment upon the health of workers from that adverse condition of promotive, preventive and curative medicine and sanitary engineering (2).


Objectives of occupational health:
1. Promotion of health of the workers and their families by providing healthful environment.
2. Preventive measures, adequate treatment and adequate nursing services should be available for the workers and their families.
3. Health and education to promote and protect the health of the workers and their families.
4. Prevention of diseases by routine immunization programme.
5. Measures are taken to prevent industrial accidents.
6. Helping the injured and diseased workers for proper rehabilitation.
7. Finding out the causes of industrial hazards or accidents.
8. Legislative measures to protect health of the workers.
